THE CHINESE NEW YEAR

Aloha readers, wishing you a semi-late Happy Lunar / Chinese New Year! Celebrations last 15 days so not too late yet.

I apologise for the lack of posts - mostly laziness, then busy-ness. Also I've fallen sick with flu for the 2nd time in 2 months (last time was Christmas) - what happens when I visit Chinatown on CNY sales season. Last time I went - due to work, no choice - came down with chicken pox. Horrible. That was about 8 years ago but things don't change. Or maybe I got the virus from some walkby coffers visiting that crowded new mall nearby =P

Anyhow, managed a quick snapshot of the lights there, it is the year of the Rabbit so there's lots of them bunnies around. It was alright, wasn't too fancy, somewhat kitsch with glowing purple plum blossom lights and cartoon rabbit mascots.

This is a video my bf shot - his first time here experiencing chinese new year, and the only reason why I'd be in Chinatown. It was very crowded. Like what the chinese say 人山人海 'ren shan ren hai' which means 'people mountain people sea' - you get it. It wasn't as crowded as it would be on new year's eve but still.

I visited the art museum recently and it was great, will post up Yoshitomo Nara's exhibits on my next post!

I hope you're feeling better.

I often think its such a shame that we don't have certain areas like this to show how multicultured it is but also to learn about other places too.

Halal meat is easy to buy where I live as it has a huge population of muslims, there are also many southern asian restaurants/take aways but Mcdonalds, KFC etc... don't provide food with halal meat so I can't eat there(well in mcdonalds I can have the fish o fillet meal and veggie burgers).

First of all, so sorry to hear you're not feeling well. :-( I hope you get better soon!

And secondly, I am so fascinated by the lights and bright colors! The video is beautiful. I love the way he fades in and out of focus. Very artistic!
